Federal Agencies

Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS)
Serves as the federal government’s primary vehicle for reducing alcohol and other drug use and violence through education and prevention activities in our nation’s schools. A division of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS)
Leads federal efforts to promote mental health and prevent the development of mental illness. Activities include a school violence prevention initiative to improve mental health services for children with emotional and behavioral disorders who are at risk of violent behavior. A division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP)
Promotes comprehensive programs, community involvement, and partnership among all sectors of society to reduce substance abuse and its associated problems. A division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)
Supports a variety of activities aimed at improving the lives of individuals and families affected by alcohol and drug abuse by ensuring access to clinically sound, cost-effective addiction treatment. A division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
Serves as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. CDC’s Division of Violence Prevention conducts research and other efforts to prevent youth violence, family violence, suicide, and firearms injuries; and its Division of Adolescent and School Health concentrates on health risk behaviors among children, adolescents, and young adults. An agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Corporation for National and Community Service
The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through three programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Members and volunteers serve with national and community nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, schools, and local agencies to help meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other critical areas. The Corporation is part of USA Freedom Corps, a White House initiative to foster a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility, and help all Americans answer the President's Call to Service.

Disaster Help
This Web site is a part of the President's Disaster Management E-gov Initiative—a larger initiative aimed at greatly enhancing disaster management on an interagency and intergovernmental basis.

Emergency Planning Web site
The U.S. Department of Education’s Emergency Planning Web site offers resources to help school officials plan for any emergency, including natural disasters, violent incidents, and terrorist acts. (For details, see Planning for Emergencies.)

Federal Emergency Management Agency
On March 1, 2003, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.

Freedom Corps
During his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush called upon every American to get involved in strengthening America's communities and sharing America's compassion around the world. He created the USA Freedom Corps to help all Americans to answer his call. As a Coordinating Council housed at the White House and chaired by President George W. Bush, Freedom Corps works to strengthen our culture of service and help find opportunities for every American to start volunteering.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Develops standards and research to reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. Includes efforts to prevent injury and death due to impaired driving from alcohol and other drugs. A division of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

National lnstitute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Supports and conducts biomedical and behavioral research on the causes, consequences, treatment, and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
Conducts scientific research on drug abuse and addiction, and disseminates the results of that research to significantly improve drug abuse and addiction prevention, treatment, and policy. A division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health.

National Institute of Justice (NIJ)
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the primary research branch of the U.S. Department of Justice. The Institute: sponsors policy-relevant research, evaluates criminal justice policies and practices, tests and demonstrates promising new approaches, provides training and technical assistance, assesses new criminal justice technology, and disseminates its findings to State and local practitioners and policymakers. NIJ emphasizes policy-relevant research that responds to the practical needs of those in the criminal justice system.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
Serves as the federal government’s lead agency to provide national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization. A division of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs.

Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)
Establishes national policies to reduce illicit drug use, manufacturing, and trafficking, and oversee international and domestic anti-drug efforts of executive branch agencies. An office within the Executive Office of the President.

Pandemic Flu
Provides access to U.S. Government avian and pandemic flu information. Managed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Web site offers information about preventing terrorist attacks within the United States.
